About Us

Who We Are

As one of the region’s leading public transport providers, Ipswich Buses has been helping get people around since 1903, and almost 20,000 people use our buses every day. That’s nearly 8 million car journeys a year taken off our roads.

We are committed to giving our customers and stakeholders a quality bus service with a strong focus on customer service and innovation. Along with our owners, Ipswich Borough Council, we’re striving to reduce car dependency for access to the region whilst playing a key part in boosting the local economy.

Whether travelling to work, school, the shops, on a day or night out, or to visit friends and family, Ipswich Buses makes sure people can get to the places they need to be across the Borough of Ipswich, into the towns of Colchester / Framlingham.

Our History

Proudly serving Ipswich since 1903

Originating as Ipswich Corporation back in 1903 when we began operating trams, which around 20 years later gave way to trolley buses before the first diesel powered motor buses were introduced in 1950.

In 1986 when the British bus industry outside London was deregulated Ipswich Buses was privatised and a new company called “Ipswich Buses Ltd” was formed and under the transport act was operated as an arm’s length company by Ipswich Borough Council.

Today Ipswich Buses remains wholly owned by Ipswich Borough Council and operates 80 vehicles on a network of routes across the Borough of Ipswich, East Babergh, Colchester and the surrounding areas employing 180 people across two sites in Central Ipswich.
